FFS Debate Team Competes in Second Tournament This Season
By Andrew S.
The debate season is well on its way for The Family Foundation School students and Coach Bruce Hutchison.
On Saturday, November 22, Hutchison and eleven students, accompanied by staff members Mary Lou Hunter and Veronica Heesh, participated in a debate tournament in Towanda, PA.
It was a triathlon tournament, a competition in which contenders can participate in up to three individual speech events. If they were entered in debate they could also enter in a speech event.
There were eight students entered in Public Forum Debate (four teams total). In Public Forum, students debate on a topic that is announced at the beginning of the month. Dan C. and Nat L. placed third, Andrew S. and Sam B. placed fourth, and Andrew E. and Paul D. placed fifth.
There were five students entered in Extemporaneous, an event in which students give a speech with only a half hour of preparation. Victor C. placed first with a perfect score, Matt W. placed third, and Ethan M. placed fifth.
Nat L. received first place for Original Oratory for his speech By Andrew S. on fast food entitled Have It Your Way.
Sam B. placed fifth in Impromptu, an event in which participants are given a topic that they have to speak on with only two minutes of prep time.
Matt W. placed second in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, a debate between two people on a topic that is also announced at the beginning of the month.
Overall, the team placed third in the tournament. Many of the students who went were first time debaters, which look good for the season ahead. The next series of tournaments will be in January.
