Upstate New York Sees Coldest Temperature

By Andrew S.

Is upstate New York getting colder?

New York is known for its rugged winters, is this a particularly tough one or have we been spoiled by global warming?

Every morning seems to be the same scene; temperatures far below freezing and snow with a thin layer of ice blanketing much of the ground.

Several Family Foundation School students, most of whom grew up in climates much different than Hancock, were asked what they thought of the winter they are currently facing in the Upstate New York town.

Pat M. from Arizona was astounded with the weather here, saying, “There is about a fifty degree difference where I am from, there is no snow or temperature like this.”

Jessica B., who lived in Florida, exclaimed, “I feel like I’m in a freezer!” Rafael L., also from Florida, said, “Miami’s climate is amazing, but here it sucks because it is way too cold.”

Diego N., who grew up in Panama, said, “I’ve seen snow, but never like this. Hancock is wild. I like to surf and I can’t do that in this weather.”

Tom S., who was born in Japan, said, “None of the winters were as extreme there as they are here. It only gets cold, windy, and rainy.”

However, the students are not the only ones who see this winter as a bad one. Jim Rodgers, a local resident, and FFS English teacher and staff member, said, “We are experiencing a much colder winter… For the past week the temperature has been four or five degrees below that of the mean.”

The lowest temperature this month was -11 degrees Fahrenheit and with wind chill it was much colder. Not one day so far has had a low temperature above freezing. Topping it all off, Upstate New York is seeing a massive amount of snow fall.
