After many years of having a cottage in northeast Pennsylvania, Dr. Myrl Manley, M.D. looked around for a job in the surrounding area. An ad for a school doctor in Hancock, N.Y. caught his attention. “I was very interested to see what the job entailed.” He applied and joined The Family Foundation School in January 2009.

In the mid-80s Dr. Manley spent two years teaching psychology at the University of Zimbabwe, Africa. After that, he moved back to the States. As part of the faculty at NYU, Dr. Manley has run the medical school courses in psychology for 15 years.

Dr. Manley got his medical degree at the University of San Francisco and his degree in psychiatry at Cornell University.

His plan is to phase out from NYU and do full-time clinical work. He works at his office in Brooklyn and this is his first time working in upstate New York. “This is a great chance to spend time up here, keep up the cottage and just do more.”

Dr. Manley has worked with kids like the students at The Family School before in many different settings. “I’ve worked with many adolescents suffering from depression, addiction, and behavioral difficulties before; but I have never worked in a setting like this [school].”

Since beginning his new job Dr. Manley has found his experience to be a rewarding one. “I love it! It’s absolutely thrilling! There’s a very hardworking atmosphere here. [This place] is so interesting,” said the eager doctor.
