Passion Play Pilgrimage

May 4, 2009

by Pat C.

Every ten years, since the early 1600s, the descendants of the people of the Oberammergau Village who survived the Black Plague, put on a passion play to honor the life, death and rising of Jesus Christ.

From May 27 through June 3, 2010, Father Chris Welch, pastor of St. Paul the Apostle Church, will lead a pilgrimage to the Passion Play. The pilgrimage will go to Munich, Oberammergau, Innsbruck, Salzburg and Altotting, Germany.

The Passion Play will be held on Sunday, May 30, in Oberammergau, Germany, and is 7 to 8 hours long, including a 3-hour dinner break. While on the pilgrimage, Mass will be celebrated every day and is open to anyone who would like to attend.

Father Welch said, “The Passion Play pilgrimage is open to anyone who is interested. You don’t have to be of the Catholic faith…I am attending the Passion Play to help keep the legacy going and for a spiritual experience.”

Those interested in joining the pilgrimage can still make reservations. A $500 deposit is required. To make these reservations and find out more about the pilgrimage, call Father Welch at (607)-637-2571.
