Memorial Day commemorates the members of the United States Armed Forces who were killed in war. In honor of the holiday academic classes were cancelled at the Family Foundation School.

After a Memorial Day chapel service, the students took part in a patriotic parade. Each of the seven families prepared a section of the parade by creating floats, selecting music, dressing in patriotic colors, and writing speeches about the importance of the holiday. At the reviewing stand, Family Six was  named most patriotic.

After the parade, the students and staff had time to relax in the sun; playing volleyball, swimming in the lake, spending quality time with their friends and then tackling a chicken and corn on the cob barbeque. Family Four student Raja A. stated, “It was great to spend time with my peers while celebrating such a patriotic holiday.”

In the afternoon, students and staff continued their celebration with a relay race. Each family picked a team to participate in the event that consisted of a three-legged race, potato sack race, wheelbarrow race, basketball shooting contest, donut eating contest, guess the mystery food, and water balloon toss. Family Two was the first to finish.

Sam B. of Family Two said, “I really liked the way the event committee made Memorial Day fun, but also how the students were able to uphold the seriousness of the holiday and convey the message of what Memorial Day really means.” With great food, beautiful weather, creative patriotic events, and a relaxing atmosphere, Memorial Day at FFS was overall a very good day.
