Though she graduated with a degree in biology, Dawn Finlay has taught math for the past eleven years. Recently, she was promoted to the head of the mathematics department at the Family Foundation School.
When asked how she ended up getting the job, Finlay explained that at FFS the staff encourage the students to always do the job before they get it. That is what she did. Gerald Janauer had been in charge of both the science and math departments, and was feeling the pressure of the job. Finlay was already helping Janauer with this heavy workload, and when he decided to give the job to someone else, he chose her; she already knew what she was doing.
Finlay’s job entails being the middleman between the teachers in the math department and administration. More than anything, Finlay explained that her new job is a service position.
In addition to heading up the math department, Finlay is going to school for mathematics. “If all goes as planned,” she said, “I will have my math degree in September.”
