About fifty years ago, the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports began to initiate in-school programs to promote healthy lifestyles and encourage physical fitness across the nation. One idea was the Presidential Physical Fitness Award Program. This program, which recognizes American students for reaching exceptional levels of physical fitness, has been around for over 40 years.
Almost every school across the nation takes part in this program, which consists of five events that test a student’s muscular strength/endurance, cardio respiratory endurance, speed, agility, and flexibility. There are three separate awards that a student is eligible to win. The first and highest award is the Presidential Physical Fitness Award which recognizes students who achieve an outstanding level of physical fitness and score above the 85th percentile on all five events. The next award is the National Physical Fitness Award; this is given to students who receive a score that is higher than the 50th percentile in all five events. The final award is the Participant Physical Fitness Award and is given to students who receive a score that is lower than the 50th percentile in one or more of the events. This award is for participating in the challenge.
The Presidential Physical Fitness Award Program testing occurs twice a year in most schools.
