If you find yourself falling into a trance, being hypnotized by music emanating from Whiting Hall on Saturday afternoons, it’s probably Chris B, Cajai J, and Nash B. jamming and creating music. Recently, the dynamic trio has come together and begun to create art in the form of melodies.
The project started in Robin Ducey’s creativity class. “We all came together through God’s will,” said Nash B, “and songs started taking shape.” The three began composing music, but wanted to go further; to record it and make a CD, and that’s exactly what they’re doing. With the help of Ducey, who wanted to make it happen, and Tom Kovaleski, who provided recording equipment, their dream slowly began to take shape.
The three made a CD of seven songs in Kovaleski’s office. It included original works such as “The Ballad of Sir Gregory,” a song about a man who saw his true love slip away, and “Night,” a song expressing love and appreciation for the starlit sky. Chris B. plays guitar, sharing the vocals with Cajai J, while Nash B supplies the percussion and harmonica.
The musicians described their music as modern folk, with rock, reggae, and funk influences. “I was very impressed; they have a unique and original sound,” said Kovaleski. In describing the music-making process. Chris B. said, “Whatever is going on with this is definitely God. It’s too beautiful to be created by us alone.” The group calls itself “Musaic.” They continue to write and record new music, and to work with songs written by students at the school. They plan on completing a full CD.
While they aim for the highest professional standards, it is clear that this venture is about more than being recognized and getting up on a stage someday. This group has a purpose, as Cajai J expressed, “Music shouldn’t be about one person who wants to be famous; it’s about people making art together and showing it to the rest of the world.”
