Yves K. scored two goals and Evan H. scored one to give The Family Foundation School Falcons soccer team their third Section 9, Class D championship title in the last seven years as they defeated arch-rival Chapel Field, 3-1, on a rainy Halloween day at Faller Field in Middletown.
The Falcons’ next challenge will come on November 11 at Faller Field when they meet Suffolk County champions Smithtown Christian in the first round of the state tournament.
Yves K. scored first on a pass from Sean C. to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead at the half. According to Falcons’ coach Willy Williamson, the ball bounces faster and further on artificial turf, and it took his team the first twenty minutes to adjust. He said during the half he told the team to be patient, that things would come.
Three minutes into the second half Evan H. got the ball in front of the goal. He didn’t rush his shot, took the time to check the goalie and blasted a shot into the lower corner of the net. Six minutes later, Chris B. put Chapel Field on the scoreboard with their only goal of the afternoon. With 12 minutes left in regulation time, Yves K. wound up the scoring for the game. He said, “I got the pass and trapped it. First time I hit it I missed, but I got lucky when it didn’t get far away from me and I went to it and scored.” Yves K, who scored 18 goals this season, was excited about the team going to the state tournament. He said, “Even if we lose, I want to do my best so I can say I gave it all I had.”
Coach WIlliamson, who’s in his first season with the Falcons, said he had no idea what to expect when the Falcons meet Smithtown Christian next Tuesday. He said they knocked off a highly ranked team. “But we are going to work hard at practice all week and play the way we’ve been playing all season.”
Williamson credited the team’s defense Ignacio A, Max R, Marc S, Matt B, and goalie Kyle F. for much of the Falcons’ success this season. He said, “If the other team doesn’t score, they don’t win.”
