“Trees are the Earth’s endless struggle to speak to the ever listening Heaven.” These are the words of Rabindranath Tagore, a Nobel Prize-winning Hindu writer and poet, and they inspired a few students from Talbot House to spend a Saturday afternoon at the Family Foundation School planting a tree near the chapel. The students were Liam M, Dave M, Brendan O. and Kevin D. They have been doing a lot of gardening around campus and have had a lot of fun doing it.
The tree was given to Talbot House family leader Jan Cheripko by Greg R, a former student. It was an apple tree that Greg R. named “Janis” because he loves Janis Joplin.
The four students placed the tree in the field next to the chapel by the Stations of the Cross. Cheripko directed the students on how to go about planting it, and they toiled in the hot sun for over an hour with care and devotion.
“I hope Janis will grow beautifully,” said Dave M, “and I am proud of the work that my friends and I have done.”
The students are looking foward to returning to the school in a few years to literally enjoy the fruits of their labor by picking apples from the tree.
The students have also been planting flower bulbs on Chapel Hill near the memorial that honors four former students who were killed in a car accident.
