Julie C.

Class of June 2009

Julie arrived at The Family Foundation School on January 9, 2008 and was enrolled in Family Three (now Lake House). She came to the school for problems related to drugs, alcohol and bad relationships with her parents and friends.

When she first arrived, she just flew under the radar and had no intention of changing. However, she turned 18 five months into her stay so she was faced with a decision: Stay and change, or leave and do the same old thing. In making the decision to stay, she had no regrets. She now has a good relationship with her mom, her friends, and is doing positive things she never saw herself doing.

While at FFS, Julie kept busy with her studies and extracurricular activities like chorus, show choir, the fall musical “The Wizard of Oz,” and most important to her sobriety, woodcarving.

After 18 months, she graduated in June 2009 and enrolled in Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. “After leaving the school, I saw people from my own graduating class fall into the same old thing. It is a huge reality check because no one is invincible and everyone has to close those back doors in order to obtain sobriety,” she said.

Today she keeps in close contact with the school, her alumni peers such as Shari M., and has positive fun with her friends. To the newcomer she says, “Have faith that if you do the work, everything will get better. And pray.”

Watching Julie change was truly amazing. It seemed, at first, that she would never stop crying; all anyone had to do was to look at her! She was angry and confused as so many adolescents are who come to The Family School. I watched her change and grow, alternating beween resisting and accepting, for months, until she emerged smiling in her graduation robe, a strong young woman with purpose and clarity.
