Lady Falcons Defeat the Division B Monticello Panthers, 55-49 at the Falcon Nest

Falcons’ guard Nadine N. ran the night, scoring 31 points and stealing the ball 11 times, leading the Falcons to their first victory on December 1. Backing her up, forward Karen S. snatched 13 rebounds.
Monticello Panther, Dorentina R., was a huge threat, grabbing 15 rebounds and scoring 12 points with help from guard Anastasia B. who scored 11.
The game started with the Panthers winning the tip-off. Shortly after, Nadine stole the ball on a bad pass and then threw it to guard Denise T. who drove to the basket for an easy lay-up. “It felt good to be able to put the team ahead,” said Denise. The quarter ended with a score of 17-9, Falcons.
During the second quarter, the Falcons’ chemistry was evident through their sharp passing, smart shot choices, and heads-up defense. Collectively, during the quarter, the Falcons amassed seven steals; three from guard Sarah V. and four from Nadine. They were able to stretch their lead from 8 to 10 as the half ended 30-20, Falcons.
The third quarter was fairly slow for the Falcons. They were 3 for 17 from the floor and were only able to score 12 points; however, they only allowed 10. Nadine was 100 percent from the line, shooting 6 for 6.
The last quarter was the closest and most intense period of the game.
With 6:24 left on the clock, FFS forward and leading rebounder fouled out of the game.
Minutes later, Monticello’s Rossi, was fouled and made both of her free throws cutting the lead to three with the score 44-41, Falcons. As a result, Head Coach Carlton Williams called a timeout.
With two seconds left in the game Nadine fouled out, after scoring six points on consecutive lay-ups followed by foul shots.
Assistant coach of the Monticello Panthers, Dan Orlan, commented, “It was our first game of the season. We are a young team and we have a lot to work on.”
After the win Falcons Head Coach Carlton Williams said, “It’s always good to win on your home court. We let them have a lot of second chance opportunities and didn’t box out. However, for being such a young team, I thought we did well.”
