The Family Foundation School Creates a New Debate/Forensics Team
By Brooke C.
In recent years, The Family Foundation School debate team has been one of the best in the area. Former FFS teacher, Bruce Hutchison, helped them to become the great debaters they were. Hutchison was not only the coach; he was also the man who brought debate to the school. He created the debate class, the team, and took them to tournaments all around the northeast.
In November 2009, a new team made of entirely first-timers, traveled to Hancock High School to compete against other school teams. The team consisted of Joanna B., Rebecca B., Brooke C., Jimmy G., Evan H., Ted M., Brendan O., Evan P., and Ted W.
At the award ceremony the students were delighted to discover that The Family School had taken third place. In addition two debaters, Joanna and Brooke, came in third and first place respectively. Joanna said, about getting third place, “I was surprised because it was my first time, but I was proud of myself.”
The success in Hancock gave the student debaters a reason to be proud of themselves and their successes, as Ted W. said, “After having tied for third place, I have concluded that debate is a good experience, one that I would recommend,” and Gabe L. added, “I met a lot of cool people.”
This seemed like the end of the team until an announcement was made that the debate team was to continue with FFS staff Sid Parham and Mary Hanstine as its leaders.
