Soldier Promoted and Awarded the Meritorious Medal

David J. Schoonmaker, son of David and Leta Schoonmaker, former The Family Foundation School staff, was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and promoted to Master Sergeant in Olympia, Washington on November 17, 2009.
MSG Schoonmaker has served in the military for the past twenty-two years. In this time, he has gained the approval of his fellow troops for his leadership abilities. He is a member of the U.S. Army’s 373rd Military Intelligence Battalion.
In 2008, Leta and Dave Schoonmaker, moved to Washington to spend time with their son who was stationed in Fort Lewis.
After the promotion, MSG Schoonmaker was re-assigned to Fort Devens in Massachusetts. His parents then moved back to Hancock where they have more family.
MSG Schoonmaker’s sister Tammy Finch, a current employee at The Family School, said, “Dave is very devoted to his family.” MSG Schoonmaker now lives with his wife and two children by his new post in Massachusetts. “We’re all very close as a family, and we’re all very proud of David,” said Finch.
The medal citation reads as follows:
“To all who shall see these presents, greeting: This is to certify that the President of the United States of America authorized by Executive Order, 16 January 1969, has awarded the Meritorious Service Medal to Master Sergeant David J. Schoonmaker for exeptionally meritorious service while serving as the Senior HUMINT Collection Sergeant for Alpha Company, 373rd Military Intelligence Battalion. His dedication and selfless service resulted in superior leadership and mentorship to the soldiers of Alpha Company. His willingness to go above and beyond sets a shining example for others to follow. MSG Schoonmaker’s outstanding performance reflects great credit upon himself, the 373rd Intelligence Battalion and the United States Army.”
