Annie Ostrander is now the new head nurse in The Family Foundation School Health Office. Ostrander, who is a staff in Betton House, the former soccer coach, and a sponsor, received the position recently, and has been a nurse for 13 years.
Ostrander saw becoming a nurse as a way to give back. “I liked helping people,” she said. Before coming to FFS, she worked at a long-term care facility in Binghamton. She worked on the dementia ward, helping the patients and making sure they had everything they needed.
When Ostrander came to FFS, she began working in the health office where she was a welcomed support. She has had a good experience working at the school.
“It is eye-opening to see so many different kids come in here and to watch how they work and begin to recover from their problems,” said Ostrander.
When she was approached by the administration with the job offer, she was fearful at first because it is a different kind of environment. However, she took a leap of faith and is enjoying trying something new with the help of her co-workers.
“We have such a good group of girls in the Health Office, it makes it really easy to do the job,” she said.
Recently Ostrander has been working in counseling, and although she has new responsibilities, she will continue to do so.
“It’s a lot of overseeing of everyday stuff like the general health care of all the students. It’s interacting with parents, staff and doctors, and really making sure the students have everything they need,” Ostrander said.
