Shalom to you ... Talbot House boys, Bennett O. and Liam M., raise their glasses in celebration at the Passover Seder

FFS Celebrates Passover Seder

Tables covered in blue and white set with wine glasses, the traditional Seder plate, and sparkling grape juice, transformed The Family Foundation School gym for the Passover Seder.

On the stage was a dais for the students who led the service, which was accompanied by “The Saints of Swing,” who provided a rousing musical background for the service and songs.

The nine students: Josh W., Brian S., Max Z., Nikki K., Ben B., Matt B., Alex R., Evan H., and Aaron Z. told the story of Passover, explained and executed the Seder traditions, and led the songs. Ben said, “I thought it went off very well, everyone had a good time. I had the most fun dancing the Hora, and the food was especially good.”

Students and staff of many different religious denominations attended the Seder, which was a unique experience for most. Billy J., who arrived at FFS three weeks ago, said, “I haven’t experienced many Jewish traditions, so seeing the Seder was very interesting.”

Relatives of Jewish Family School students came as well. Jack S., a Talbot House student, said, “Spending time with my grandparents made the experience much more enjoyable. Being able to celebrate Jewish holidays at The Family School makes me feel more at home.”

Dinner followed the first part of the Seder; it was prepared by Bill Cordts, Joe Barbiere, Sharon Redard, Faith Williams and a number of student volunteers.

Kurt Hock supervised the decorating, layout, and meal serving with his team of 25 amateur waiters. Hock was proud of a job well done. “I have never had such a fun group of waiters in the last nine years. They did a good job and had so much fun,” he said.

When the night came to a close “The Saints of Swing” played “Havah Nagilah” and everyone joined hands in a rousing Hora, a traditional Jewish folk dance. Mike Argiros, President of FFS, said, “I thought it was very exciting; the atmosphere was uplifting and fun. Having ‘The Saints of Swing’ perform was an element I enjoyed.”

Staff member Vince Picece said, “I think it brought the house closer together,” and Sid Parham, Academic Vice President, concluded, “It has been a blessing in my life that I have been able to go to Seders. I’m not Jewish, but I find it a very moving religious ceremony.”
