Burnin' rubber ... Timmy's tearing up the track in his 1998 Ford Probe.

11-Year-Old Local Boy Burns Up the Racetrack

By Bennett O.

An eleven-year-old race driver? Yup! His name is Timmy VanDemark, and he is the son of Myron VanDemark, a staff member at The Family Foundation School.

Although this is VanDemark’s first year racing and he has only been on the track three times, he’s improving his skills one day at a time. “At first I couldn’t believe that I was doing this. Taking a look at it, I am grateful for the fact that I am able to drive a race car at age 11,” said VanDemark.

VanDemark has been in the race world for awhile, working on his grandfather’s car from the age of seven. His grandfather decided it was time to ask Timmy if he wanted to race; he’s been racing ever since.

Timmy’s father plans on attending these events to support his son. “I think it’s great that my son, who is 11 years old, can drive an automatic shift better than me,” he said. “I can’t wait to see the smile on my son’s face when he wins his first race.”

Vandemark will start racing in May. In the meantime, he practices every Saturday in Kentwood, Binghamton, at The Five Mile Speedway. He plans to drive his 1998 Ford Probe “number 107” in the class with 11-13 year olds, and will compete in seven races. Way to go, Timmy. We’re rooting for you.
