Computers are awesome ... Brian Coleman gets a kick out of working with computers like these in the FFS IT Department.
Brian Coleman is The Man Behind “The Portal”
By Sarah B.
Brian Coleman is a software and web designer with Western Assent in Colorado. He was educated at a junior college for two years, and then spent four years at Friends University. He took Microsoft classes.
Western Assent is a small business with a team of only five people. Coleman says one benefit of being in a small business is you have no one really telling you how to spend your time; the deadline just has to be met. One difficulty of working for a small business is that you have no one really telling you how to spend your time.
He calls himself a “Jack of all trades.” Coleman knows multiple computer languages so when gets working with a customer, he can choose between the languages that best fits the job.
He started working for The Family Foundation School after visiting his sister, Shari Carroll, the head of The Family Foundation School IT department. It was not long before Coleman began working as a contractor for FFS. Coleman still has his job in Colorado, but works for the school in his free time. He has developed a website the school uses to take table topic notes and to write up sponsor reports. This is known as “The Portal.”
His next project is uniting all of the information about the workings of the school in one place. He said that he wants to turn “The Portal” into a comprehensive system and include BlackBaud, a system that contains the grades of students.
Coleman said, “My goal is to help students and staff and make life easier by just putting input into the computer and have the right information be readily available.”
